Description
This Bernina Red Train day trip from Milan is built around one railway line. A guided coach heads to Tirano, the small border town in the Valtellina, where you board the red train for the climb into Switzerland.
The line is among the highest in the Alps, and it reaches 2,256 metres above sea level among glittering glaciers. The ticket is for second class, a choice with an upside: the windows open, which helps when you want a clear photograph of the landscape.
In St. Moritz there is a walking tour and free time to stroll, look into the shops and see the resort. Then the coach drives you back to Milan, along the Maloja route as it winds down from the resort.
