Description
The Ortica street art tour takes you into a Milan neighbourhood hemmed in by viaducts, railway lines and the bends of the Lambro River. A working-class area long overlooked, it has been transformed in the last ten years and is now the first district of Milan turned into an open-air museum. A local guide leads the walk for around two hours.
At the centre of the change is the Ortica Memoria project, known as Or.Me. and made by the artist collective Orticanoodles together with local residents. More than 20 large murals recall Milan's collective memory, and the guide takes you to them through backstreets and hidden alleys.
- Anti-fascist partisans, jazz legends, factory workers and feminist icons, and the stories behind the murals
- How graffiti grew from underground rebellion into a recognised art form
- The techniques and styles of today's street artists
- What the project has meant for the local community
Wear comfortable shoes and check the forecast, since the tour may be rescheduled if the weather is bad. Photos are welcome, as long as the art and the neighbourhood are respected. Transport, food and drinks are not included.
